(And if not, why not? But that’s a topic for another post…)
Sometimes we get overwhelmed by our big dreams when we start to consider all the big steps we have to make happen to get there. Big steps are scary and time-consuming and the risk of failure is high. No wonder we’re scared of them and we avoid them as often as possible.
The good news is that big dreams are not comprised of a bunch of big steps even though that’s how it often feels.
How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.
Or– if you prefer something a bit more philosophical:
A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
The truth is you have to take little steps, lots and lots of little steps. Most of them terribly unglamorous and not very exciting. You have to write for 15 minutes a day to finish your play. You have to go to bed at 10pm instead of 11pm so you can get out of bed early enough to meditate. You have to write a business plan to get your new venture off the ground. You have to search though thousands of images to find the perfect ones to add to your Power Point presentation. Ho hum. Litttle steps- not very scary- but add all those little steps together and you’ve got something very powerful.
We’re often afraid of the mythical giant steps that we don’t feel prepared for, we don’t understand or the ones we’re sure we can’t make happen. And what usually derails us are all the little steps that scatter like fairy dust when we brush them aside. Act on the little steps and you won’t believe how quickly you move toward those big dreams.
